The Wave Energy Centre’s next annual event took place on the 14th of May 2010 at the Lisbon Congress Centre, integrated in the RENEXPO PORTUGAL, an International conference and Trade Fair on Renewable Energies and Energy Efficiency.
In the scope of present developments in the area of offshore renewable energy in the world, specifically regarding wave energy and offshore wind, namely fixed on floating platforms, WavEC’s event puts the following question: Offshore Renewable Energies: Unsolved Problem or Promising Future?

RENEXPO® Portugal
This conference was held within RENEXPO® Portugal – International Trade Fair and Conference on Renewable Energies and Energy Efficiency, which will be held from May 13th to 15th, 2010, at the Lisbon Congress Centre. It was the first integrated event exclusively dedicated to this theme ever to be held in Portugal, encompassing all the topics related to the sector.

António Sarmento
Is an associate professor at the Department of Mechanical Engineering of the Instituto Superior Técnico (Technical University of Lisbon) and is active in the field of wave energy research for more then three decades.
He is the director of the Wave Energy Centre since its foundation in 2003 and well as member of the Board of Directors of the European Ocean Energy Association since 2006. Professor António Sarmento is also member of the Board of directors of the International Society of Offshore and Polar Engineering (ISOPE), since July of 2007.

Teresa Ponce de Leão
Maria Teresa Costa Pereira da Silva Ponce de Leão has a PhD in Electronic Engineering and Computers, teaches at FEUP (Faculty of Engineering of Porto University) and is a senior researcher at INESC Porto.
Presently she is the President of LNEG – Laboratório Nacional de Energia e Geologia, I.P (National Laboratory for Energy and Geology). She is also de vice-president of the Order of the Engineers of Northern Region, member of the Executive Commission of EERA-European Energy Research Alliance, member of the Advisory Group for Energy, GIRPI – Grupo Informal de Reflexão sobre Propriedade Intelectual councillor (Informal Group for the Reflection on Intellectual Property), member of the Scientific Council of ENERGYNIN.
She collaborated in the organization of several national and international events as a member of the scientific committees and/or with relevance to the Portuguese-Afro-Brazilian, the Power-Tech and the Probabilistic Methods Applied to Power Systems (Risk Management Methods Applied to Power Systems).
Author and co-author articles published in international books and magazines and of the book Mercados da Electricidade – Regulação e Tarifação de Uso das Redes (Electricity Markets – Regulation and Tariff of the Use of Networks).

Carlos Silva
Invited Assistant Professor at the Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), withing the MIT Programme- Portugal , where he works in modeling, planning and optimization of energy sustainable systems and energetic efficiency. He coordinates presently a research project for the conpection and monitoring of a roadmap for marine energy in Portugal in collaboration with WavEC, LNEG and CEETA-ECO. He obtained his degree in 1999 and PhD in Mecahnical Engineering at the IST/UTL in 2005 and has developed his professional activity in system modelling and operational research at industry and university (Albatroz Engineering, Siemens CT, IDMEC, ENIDH). |

Luis Mingo
Luis Mingo Reiz, graduated in law from the Autonomous University of Madrid, has held numerous senior positions in companies such as Foster Wheeler or Isolux Group. Besides he was president of the Galician society of environment.
At present, he is president of Soil Recovery-Sea Energy, a company focused on the environmental sector including marine energy. Currently he is also president of the division of marine energy within the Spanish Renewable Energy Association (APPA). |

Dr. Karl Christian Stromsem
MSc and Doctor of Engineering from NTNU in Trondheim and IFP in Paris in hydrodynamics and marine structures. Worked for more than 20 years with marine related design in the international offshore oil and gas industry with the latest years as Projects director Europe for Noble Denton Consultants in London. He also worked many years with the Scandinavian power industry delivery advanced services for companies trading at the Scandinavian power exchange NordPool.
Is now attached to the European Ocean Energy Association in Brussels as business development manager in addition to running his own consultancy firm focusing on management consulting for the renewable industry, offshore oil and gas and the power industry. Located in Oslo Norway.

João Cardoso
João Freire Cardoso is collaborator of Martifer Group since January 2008. He is a Portuguese Navy Commander (Reserve) with more than 25 years of professional maritime experience, which range from on board officer to planning and conduction of Naval Operations. He has a degree in oceanographic and meteorology sciences, issue by the Portuguese Naval Academy and he is a specialist in Naval Weapons Systems. He is also an expert (with a PO Navy and NATO courses) in Naval, Amphibious, Psychological, Information and Intelligence Operations. He has served in corvettes and frigates of the Portuguese Navy with more than 25.000 hours at sea, performing duties in fishing protection, SAR, Naval Operations. He also performed duties as a Staff Officer in the Joint Chief of Staff and in the Minister of Defense.
After he left the Navy (In 2005) he worked as sales manger director for an Oil & Gas engineering company.
In Martifer he has been working as liaison with government agencies, licensing of offshore projects, consultor for marine environment operations and projects. As hobby he is a sport sailor, since tender age. |

Ricardo Jesus
Law Director and Secretary-General of Generg Group.
Degree in Law at Autonomous University of Lisbon. Postgraduate in Management at Portuguese Catholic University . Since 2005 he began his functions both as General Secretary and Law Director of GENERG Group. During this period he has been involved with the development of diverse wind and photovoltaic projects, namely in the field of Project Finance, supply chain and coordination of public financial mechanisms that aim to increase the installed power. He is also a member of the Consortium board of the “Standpoint” project that aims to develop a wave energy device and that is co-financed by the EU under the 7th Framework program aimed at R&D projects.

Nathan Faulks
In October 2007 Nathan joined Oceanlinx bringing with him international finance experience in a variety of businesses ranging from rapidly growing small-medium enterprises to large blue chip international organisations including BHP and Credit Suisse. Nathan holds a Bachelor of Commerce and is a qualified accountant with CPA Australia.
From Oceanlinx's London office, Nathan manages the company's business, commercial and project development activities in Europe and the Americas. |

Filipe Aguiar
Project Manager of Eneólica S.A., Lena Group, since September 2008, responsible in Portugal for the development of WaveRoller Project activities. With a degree in Applied Chemistry he has developed his professional experience in the field of renewable energy production areas and Biofuel, starting from 2003. |

Carlos Moreno
Director of Urbancraft Energia S.A., FDO / ABBorges Group.
Obtained his degree in Industrial Production Engineering at the Faculty of Science and Technology at the Universidade Nova. MBA at AESE / IESE. Since 2007 he is responsible for the development of the energy business unit and has been involved in diverse projects related to the production of renewable energy, namely wind, solar (Pv and CPV), water resources of the Portuguese and Polish market at different stages from site selection, contract with clients, construction, management of participation in bidding processes for the assignment of power injection capacity.

João Maciel
João Maciel holds a degree in Electrical Engineering from the Lisbon Technical University, has an MBA and a post graduate diploma in Project Management from Portuguese Catholic University. He worked at the R&D department of Labelec – EDP group since 2001 and was involved in several R&D Projects regarding Renewable Energies, Micro-cogeneration and the Distribution Network. Since 2007 he has been working at EDP Inovação, heading the Technology Development Unit and managing several projects in the clean energy area (namely regarding offshore, Solar, Storage, energy efficiency, smartgrids, electric mobility). Since 2008 helped to establish and also acts as Technology Adviser to EDP Ventures (EDP's Corporate Venture Capital Fund). |

Frank Neumann
Frank Neumann has a degree in Civil Engineering obtained at the University of Karlsruhe (Germany) in 1999. In the same year he started his activity in wave energy at the Instituto Superior Técnico developing studies related to the technological and economical viability of coastal wave energy devices. In 2003 he joins the WavEC team contributing actively in its foundation and management. He coordinated a researchers’ network formed by the Wavetrain project and is responsible for the upcoming Wavetrain2 project, initiated in 2008. He also coordinates the monitoring works at the Pico device since 2005. Since January 2008 Frank Neumann is the Associate Director of the WavEC.

Paal Bakken
Founder and CEO. Bakken has a BSc with honours in Finance and Marketing (University of Oregon, USA), and 12 years experience in Asia in the field of seafood and aquaculture. For 7 years he was founder and President of the seafood company Cocoon KK in Japan and for 5 years he was President of Stolt Sea Farm Asia Pacific in Singapore. As a youth, he also gained invaluable hands-on experience in harvesting and processing of wild seaweed at his father¹s seaweed meal factory in Norway.
Bioenergy production utilizing the Earth’s vast oceans offers tremendous opportunity as a worldwide renewable energy resource. Seaweed Energy Solutions (SES) is focused on the development of large-scale offshore cultivation of seaweed and conversion of this biomass to biogas and bioethanol. SES is a leader in seaweed-to-biofuel solutions with operations in Portugal and Norway. |

José M. Ferreira da Cruz
José Cruz obtained his degree at IST in Naval Engineering, in 1991 and practices since 1993 project activities, consultancy at fishery marine sectors, commerce and navy.
He is presently coordinator of an engineering and naval architecture project department with the capacity for the development of naval projects and strongly skilled for the research of structural projects in the field of offshore technologies. |

Friedrich B Kohl
Friedrich B Kohl studied engineering, design, environment and completed a MA at Braunschweig University, Germany in 1980.
He worked in shipping and aviation, in government as well as with re-newable energy (solar-thermal, transport and marine) technologies companies and organisations in Australia and Germany, since 1998 as an independant consultant.
He set up and managed/manages businesses and has been a director of Energyisland Ltd and its predecessor since 2003.

Teresa Bertrand
Works currently at the GPPQ - Gabinete de Promoção do 7ºPrograma-Quadro de I&DT (FP7 Promotion Office) as the FP7 National Contact Point for Energy. This department’s mission is to facilitate the access of national entities to community funding.
She is member of the SET-Plan working group, the energy technology strategic plan for 2020.

Margarida Almodovar
Margarida Almodovar holds a degree in Landscape Architecture by University of Évora and has two post graduate diplomas, one in Environmental Management, obtained at the Instituto Superior de Educação e Ciências (Superior Institute of Education and Science) and another in Landscape Planning and Management in the Perspective of the European Union at the Universidade Nova de Lisboa.
Member of MAOTDR at the National Commission of the National Ecological Reserve since 1993; Expert, designated by Portugal, of the group to accompany the Implementation of the Integrated Coastal Zone Management; representative of the Instituto de Água (Water Institute), at the working group for ocean related issues of MAOTDR, Decision of MAOTDR of the 3rd of December of 2008. Representative of MAOTDR at the Interministerial Commitee for Sea Affairs (CIAM) – Decision of MAOTDR of the 3rd of December of 2008.
In 2004 she was nominated, in substitute regime, as the Environment and Urban Affairs Division Leader, integrated in the Instituto de Água’s Water Domain Services Direction. Since 2007 she was nominated, in substitute regime, Director of the Planning and regulation of water domain Department at the Instituto de Água. |

Tiago Pitta e Cunha
Expert in Maritime and Ocean Affairs. Tiago Pitta e Cunha was a member of the cabinet of the Commissioner for maritime affairs, European Commission responsible for the coordination of the European Integrated Maritime Policy.
At his former function he was coordinator of the Strategic Ocean Commission in Portugal and before delegate for maritime affairs at the United Nations in New York. |

Paulo Ferrão
Paulo Ferrão is a Professor at Instituto Superior Tecnico, at the Technical Uniersity of Lisbon where he is co-founder and current director of IN+, Center for Innovation, Technology and Policy Research. He is the National Director of the MIT-Portugal Program, the major international partnership on Science and Technology in Portugal, in the field of Engineering Systems, and he is also the focus area lead for Sustainable Energy Systems. |
